Conflict Between Obedience And Authority And Personal Morale

One of the biggest questions to date that still remains, is how individuals could ever participate in such unethical behaviors and what motivated these ordinary individuals to commit such corrupt acts in nature. â€Å"The essence in obedience consists in the fact that a person comes to view himself as an instrument for carrying out another person s wishes and he therefore no longer regards himself as responsible for his actions.† ( ) When one thinks of the many historical events, it is evident that much of humans behaviour is a result of obedience to authority in contrast to rebellion. Why is this? One and possibly the most famous experiment ever executed to investigate this moral question is referred to as â€Å"The Milgram experiment.† We†¦show more content†¦Procedure: Participants were 40 males, aged between 20 and 50, whose jobs ranged from unskilled to professionals. They were paid $4.50 for just turning up. At the beginning of the experiment participants were introduced to another participant, who was actually a confederate of the experiment. Tiny pieces of paper were drawn to determine the roles. For example, the learner or the teacher. Milgram did this to make the allusion to the participants this was a true experiment, while the experiment would be fixed as the confederate would always be the learner. Two rooms in the Yale Interaction Laboratory were used - one for the learner, with an electric chair and another for the teacher and experimenter with an electric shock generator. The â€Å"learner† was strapped to a chair with electrodes. After he has learned a list of word pairs given him to learn, the teacher tests him by naming a word and asking the learner to recall its partner from a list of four possible choices.
